How to avoid empty calories

Eating too much of the “once-in-a-while” foods is bad for your health in a number of ways: such foods tend to be high in fat and sugar, which means that they are also high in calories and are likely to lead to overweight. Secondly, the saturated fat and trans fatty acid content of many of these products, along with their reliance on refined flour, also has a detrimental effect on health. Moreover, many of these foods provide little nutritional value – hence the term “empty calories”. This means that people who eat a lot of them may be overweight, yet suffer from malnutrition.
